Behavior Crisis Strategies

Tier 3 students receive more intensive, individualized support to improve their behavioral and academic outcomes. Tier 3 strategies work for students with developmental disabilities, autism, emotional and behavioral disorders, and those not diagnosed.
So why is this important to Law Enforcement and Mental Health responders. If you were buying an auto part, you need to know the right vehicle and various attributes of the vehicle. The same concept applies to those responding to a crisis incident. The response should be based on various attributes of the student in crisis. Let me repeat that STUDENT IN CRISIS.
We all have experienced an emotional break in our cognitive thinking and our ability to regulate a proper response to the situation. The frontal lobe can become a battleground for reasoning. The battle can become intense rapidly as the emotional bank is drained. Add in the social attributes and you are now presented with a Tier 3 student.
A less trained responder may not understand there are various strategies that can be used to manage behavior. Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports can minimize any escalated response.
In the educational setting many students are removed from the general educational and placed in an alternative setting due to violent behavior, aggressive behavior, substance abuse, truancy, and sexual deviance (Van Acker 2007).
First responders/Crisis workers must deal with the situation in the moment and can not merely place the STUDENT IN CRISIS in an alternative setting. Arrest is not always the answer and transport to a mental facility can become volatile. A catch 22 situation. The proper response is trained responders.
First responders and crisis workers can benefit from knowing their STUDENT IN CRISIS. A well trained department can minimize officer involved shooting/brutality complaints through Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support training.
